About Clarence NY
Clarence is a fast-growing town in northeastern Erie County, bordered to the north by Tonawanda Creek and Lockport (Niagara County), to the east by Newstead, to the south by Lancaster, and to the west by Amherst. The town’s population jumped by more than 17 percent from 2000 to 2010, and more than 30,000 people now reside in Clarence. Part of the town is suburban, and the rest is light industry and agricultural. The town has several hamlets – most notably, Clarence Center – and many communities, but no incorporated villages.
For grocery shopping, Clarence has a Dash’s Mart at 8845 Main St. There are three Top’s Friendly Market stores in neighboring Amherst, including one on Transit Road in East Amherst. Wegmans has two supermarkets in nearby Williamsville, on Transit Road and on Sheridan Drive. Clarence has a Walgreen’s and Rite Aid pharmacy. For retail shopping, several options can be found including Walmart, Eastern Hills Mall, and Best Buy.
The Clarence Central School District covers most of the town of Clarence and has one high school, one middle school and four elementary schools. The Clarence Public Library is at Three Town Place, next to Town Hall. The closest hospital is Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital in neighboring Amherst.
Transportation & Traffic
The New York State Thruway passes through the southeastern part of Clarence, and a service area on the Thruway is named for Clarence. Route 5 is an east-west highway that passes through the southern part of town, and Route 78, also known as Transit Road, is a busy roadway that marks the west town line.
Recreation & Entertainment
One of the largest antique-flea market complexes in the region is Antique World Market in Clarence. A quick drive south is the Lancaster Opera House in Lancaster, which hosts a variety of shows and plays. Golfers will enjoy Greenwood Golf Course in Clarence Center and the Glen Oak Golf Course in nearby East Amherst, as well as several other nearby courses.
Movie theaters are nearby in Williamsville, at the Eastern Hills Cinema and the huge Regal Transit Center Stadium 18 & IMAX. Niagara Falls is a quick, half-hour drive northwest of Clarence, and Buffalo, with its many attractions, is only 20 miles southwest.
